| GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT GRANT The University of Eastern Africa, Baraton – Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Malaria Research Project began in October, 2009. The title of the research project is “ Malaria Diagnosis Using Iron and Plasma”. The grant was won under the general topic: Create Low-Cost Diagnostics for Priority Global Health Conditions. The University won round 3 of the Grand Challenges Explorations for Global Health supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation based in Seattle, USA. The awards were announced on October 21, 2009. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced 76 new global health projects under its 3rd round of the Grand Challenges Explorations grants. The investigators include an interdisciplinary team of scientists from the university. The project is headed by Ms. Jackie K. Obey (primary investigator), a lecturer in the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, University of Eastern Africa, Baraton. The Co-investigators for the project are Dr. Zachariah Ngalo Otieno-Ayayo (Biological Sciences), Dr. Fred Amimo (Biological Sciences) and Dr. Dickson Anjejo (Public Health).
